How do nature-based learning experiences support academic learning? Hear from guest speakers, Indiana teachers Jenna Labash and Erika Meyer, who will share their experiences in facilitating outdoor programming within school settings.

Learn how elements of outdoor learning such as sit spots, risky play and place-based learning tie to academic standards in language arts and science, and to school curriculum broadly.

ABOUT THE SPEAKERS

Jenna Labash has been teaching in public schools for 20 years and is currently the Kindergarten teacher at the Goshen College Lab Kindergarten. She has a Masters in Early Childhood Education and has been National Board Certified as an Early Childhood Generalist since 2007. She implemented a KinderForest program at the GC Kindergarten in 2018.

Erika Meyer is the Science Specialist for Early Childhood and Grades K-4 at Canterbury School in Fort Wayne, Ind. Her role as educator for the primary-aged students expanded two years ago to include early childhood students as the school’s early childhood program emphasis on outdoor experiences emerged. Previously, Erika taught students in Grades 5-8 in Chicago, making sure they had outdoor experiences: including trips to Merry Lea. She grew up tagging along on outdoor botany field studies with her father’s college students. Erika loves the many ways art and science tangle with each other and believes strongly in the restorative and informative impact of natural outdoor experiences.
